Tour: Chicago O’Hare Automated People Mover

1:30 – 5:00 p.m.*
Fee: $40 Member/$50 Non-Member

*Includes travel time from Marriott Downtown Hotel

The O’Hare Airport Transit System (ATS), or people mover, is currently under construction to modernize and expand the system. Major upgrades to the 25-year-old system include a larger fleet of cars and other enhancements to double capacity and provide direct and reliable service to and from the terminals. The upgraded system also includes a new station to connect passengers to the Multi-Modal Facility, which will provide efficient service for rent-a-car patrons and a one-stop-shop for ground transportation needs. These investments will enhance your gateway to Chicago by making it faster, more convenient, and more efficient.

APM-ATS Conference attendees will take a train to the Multi-Modal Facility, a state-of-the-art building connecting the airport's ground transportation operations in one central access point. The 2.5 million square ft. MMF houses all airport rental car operations and includes a public economy parking lot (Lot F). The tour will also include a tour of the Multi-Modal Facility Control Room.

Thursday, July 2

Tour: Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Control Center Tour

1:30 – 5:00 p.m.*
Fee: $40 Member/$50 Non-Member

*Includes travel time from Marriott Downtown Hotel

The CTA’s control center provides the CTA with the ability to centrally manage a wide range of operations and facilities, including 1900 buses, 1500 rail cars, 145 rail stations, 65 substations, and 224 miles of track. Functions performed at the control center include direct voice communication with bus/train operators and support staff, coordination with emergency response agencies, providing critical service information to its 1.6 million daily riders and monitoring video images from over 33,000 cameras. The control center is also tasked with managing 12,000 Volts AC power from the utility and ensuring it is properly converted at 65 CTA owned substations, and delivered to the tracks as 600 Volts DC. Finally, the control center is responsible for monitoring a multitude of alarms and indications from stations and support facilities.

As part of the tour, APM-ATS conference attendees will be given the opportunity to observe how the control center staff interact with operators, support staff and riders, and how critical service and emergency response decisions are made and implemented. The attendees will be given access to the gallery that houses the control center staff and will be able to visualize the system operations on a 125’ long video wall. A tour guide will be available to answer attendee questions relating to the control center and CTA’s overall operation.
